It's really very simple, more simple than religious people make it. Becoming a Christian means to become a disciple or follower of Christ. Sometimes we refer to it as being "born again," because true Christianity involves a rebirth of one's spirit; we also use the term "saved" because we are being rescued from an eternity spent without God, from the devil's destructive grasp, and also from ourselves.
Being a Christian does not mean:
You are a really good, moral person. Lots of atheists are good, moral people. You are an active church member. That won't get you into Heaven.
"There is none righteous, no, not one." Romans 3:10
Being a Christian means you have a personal relationship with God through his son, Jesus Christ.
Becoming a follower of Jesus Christ involves taking the following simple steps:
1. Recognizing your need for a Savior, because you first recognize that you are a sinner.
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23
In other words, you fall short of being the kind of person God created you to be--a whole and holy person, or in other words, a successful human being. Do you know anyone who lives up to those standards?
Actually, there was only one--Jesus Christ. He showed us the way to live and be. Anything short of his example is "off the mark," which is the original definition of the word "sin!" So if I live in any way short of how God intended me to be, I am a sinner. Insecurity, fear, pride, (even religious pride!), anger, jealousy, arrogance, hypocrisy...these are all sins. I'm a sinner! Are you?
2. Confess that Jesus is the only one who can save you. Tell him that in your own words. Keep it real. Let him know you are surrendering the control of your life to him.
"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Romans 10:13
3. Repent (do a 180) of your sins--the ones you can name, and the ones you can't. Determine in your heart that you are going to turn and walk in a new direction from now on--the direction Jesus is walking in.
4. Believe that Jesus's death on the cross was for you, and that his resurrection from the dead was also for you. You have a new life now, and some day you will physically arise to eternal life! God came to save you--body, soul and spirit.
"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8
"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Romans 10:9 “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."
